For children, summer is a magical time of no school, no homework to bring home, and about three months of unlimited downtime. At the same time, summer break can be a challenge for some parents — between trying to keep their kids from staying on the couch and being glued to the television to trying to encourage them to get outside and get some exercise, the summer can often bring some obstacles for parents when it comes to keeping their child active and healthy.

While the end of summer vacation and the start of the new school year is right around the corner, it is not too late to encourage your child to turn off the TV and electronics and become more active. In this blog, we are going to share some kid-friendly ideas to keep your family active.

Head To The Local Park

If you think back to when you were a child, you more likely than not spent hours playing at the park. As a parent, it is easy to get focused on providing your children with fun and exciting things to do that you often forget how much fun they can have just by running around the local park. From swinging to running around the playscape, there is plenty for kids to do at the park. To make their time more enjoyable, consider bringing some of your kid’s friends along for the fun. You even could bring some delicious food and treats along and make a picnic out of it!

Work on The Garden

Believe it or not, gardening is a summer activity that many children will enjoy. While it’s a given that eating fruits and vegetables is good for your body, so is growing them! Gardening has been proven to be an activity that relieves stress, boosts immunity, promotes a healthy diet, and provides a solid workout. Let your child help plant seeds, water the plants, and help pick out fruits and vegetables that are ready. Not only will they enjoy being able to play around in the dirt, but they will also appreciate being able to eat delicious veggies and fruits that they helped grow!

Limit Electronic Consumption

In this day and age, the biggest obstacle to regular exercise for kids is most likely the ready availability of multiple screens for them to entertain themselves instead. One way to prevent them turning into a couch potato is to set strict limits and rules regarding the amount of time your kids can watch TV, play video games, or spend time on phones and tablets. If possible, try to keep them active during the day and then allow some time for electronics in the evening — perhaps a movie night with the family is something they would enjoy?

Take A Family Hike, Walk, or Bike Ride

The more time parents spend with your kids modeling active behavior, the better! Simple activities like a walk, hike, or bike ride can provide children with the exercise they need. Perhaps after dinner, take the family out for an evening walk or bike ride. Don’t have any weekend plans? Head to your local parks and hit the hiking trails.

Splash Around

In the summertime when the heat hits, there’s nothing like spending time in or around water. There are a variety of water-based activities you can do with your child to help them stay active. Whether it’s playing a family-friendly game of marco polo or paddleboarding, just about every kid will not pass up an opportunity to splash around in the water. Even if you don’t have access to a pool, head to a nearby beach and enjoy time in the ocean or a lake!

Maybe your kid just has not found the summer activity that is right for them and that is okay! With vacation quickly coming to an end, now is the time to get out and try some new, fun, and active things your child hasn’t experienced yet. Whether it’s kayaking, rollerblading, or trying out kids summer camp activities, new activities will keep kids interested, active, and free of boredom.
